Astra Agro Clarifies Allegations of FOE and Walhi

Palmoilmagazine.com, JAKARTA – Prior some civil society organizations, such as, Friends of the Earth International and Wahana Lingkungan Hidup (Walhi) Indonesia accused PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk., (AALI) and its subsidiary about environment damages, human rights violation, area robbery, and violation to local people in some regions in Indonesia.

By the accusations, AALI directly clarified that Nestle and P&G are not direct buyers of what Astra Agro Group produced.

Senior Vice President Communications Astra Agro, Tofan Mahdi said knowing that the two companies are big players, one thing for sure, they could indirectly purchase the products from the buyers which are the direct customers of Astra Agro Group for all these years.

“The policy in sale of Astra Agro for all these years is selling in daily physical spot and to buyers within the best price at the same day. It is a common practice in commodity business. This issue could directly impact in non – material,” he said to Palmoilmagazine.com, Friday (30/9/2022).

Tofan also mentioned, the complaint both in open letter and by one of many buyers is the old issue which is raised up in the form of news or report. “Such issues have been clarified by our communication channels many years ago when the issues took place,” he said.

Tofan continued the latest issue in the open letter or complaint is the arrest of some men by the authority for they were suspected to steal fresh fruit bunch in March 2022.

“We are serious to get Sustainability Policy run. It is not true that Astra Agro or our subsidiary did break the regulation. Astra Agro Group obeys and implements every available regulation and policy in Indonesia,” Tofan said. (T1)
